Bethel United Methodist Church
Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Staff
Serving His Glory

By God's grace, we have an extraordinary team of servants on staff. Each one, no matter their role, has a
unique set of gifts and skills that lend themselves to the advancement of Bethel's mission statement for the
glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. The entire staff delights to see how God graces you through us and us
through you!

Please pray for the entire staff team. Pray that our labor, hour by hour, year by year, decade by decade,
will come from faith.  Let it be grounded in Praise, Prayer, and the Word.  Let it be done through His
strength in our humble helplessness; for His glory; overflowing in love; full of integrity; crammed with lots
of joy; and pointing still others to God.  We pray that God will always direct us.  And with each task
(that He wonderfully gives us) pray that He will be in it, over it, behind it, upholding it, inspiring it,
sustaining it, and rewarding it.

Amen!

The pastor's responsibilities fall into four main categories, described as Word, Sacrament, Order, and
Service. This fourfold ministry includes (but is not limited to);

  • preaching;
  • worship;
  • studying and applying Scripture to daily life;
  • celebrating the Sacraments;
  • developing congregational leaders;
  • attending to the day-to-day business of the church;
  • caring for the spiritual and temporal needs of the congregation and community;
  • modeling for and leading the congregation in acts of compassion, mercy, and justice; and
  • nurturing the congregation for mission and ministry in the world as faithful disciples of Jesus
    Christ.

Our administrative staff accomplishes a crucial portion of work in Bethel.

Our Church Secretary, Gwen Freed: This vital staff member will develop the weekly church
bulletin;   manage mail; serve as receptionist for church office, managing phone, email, and web inquiries;
type correspondence and reports; maintain files and membership information; prepare certificates of
transfer for members, baptismal certificates, and marriage licenses; maintain schedule of events; serve as
communications link; order office supplies; prepare reports and charge conference correspondence; call for
church repairs or maintenance.

Our Music Director, Sarah Helen Clagett:  Our Director is responsible to lead people of all
ages in the congregation in Praise, Worship, and Word through music-making experiences so that Bethel:

  • May grow in understanding the Christian faith and music's role in that faith.
  • Will develop and strengthen their relationship with God.
  • Will become better equipped for daily living as faithful Christian disciples.
  • Will gain basic music skills so that they may effectively serve the church as music leaders.

Our Pastor Parish Relations Committee:  This group is the administrative unit in Bethel where
staff and congregational interests are integrated to focus on the mission of the church.  The "Pastor-Parish
Relations Committee (PPRC)" is truly a Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) because the committee
relates to all staff, both bishop-appointed staff and employed staff.  The S/PPRC has some of the same
functions of a personnel office or Human Resources department in other organizations.  Therefore, the
S/PPRC members must be attuned to the movement of God's Spirit so that they serve as guides, teachers,
mentors, managers of conflict, and interpreters of ministry both to staff and the congregation including;

  • Pastor, all ordained leaders-both elders and deacons-appointed by the bishop, and the lay staff
  • The congregation (individually and corporately)
  • The community outside the walls of Bethel’s building
  • The District Superintendent, the United Methodist conference and general church staff

Our Cleaning Crew:  Bethel's janitor takes care of church buildings and furnishings: performs
cleaning and routine maintenance duties in church. Monitor's performance of furnace and boiler as well as
other building utilities. Identifies cleaning supplies that need to be ordered.  May observe church premises
for irregularities and indicators of vandalism and theft.

Leadership Team: Bethel exists to spread the Good News. Investing in the development of
members for various leadership roles, is our way of pouring prayerful/concerted/specific effort into those
who will
"go" out from us.  The pastor seeks to equip the entire staff to discover how they have been
called to ministry in the world and to accomplish those ministries.

Our Lay Leader/Speakers:   These individuals can teach/preach, lead, and communicate,
encourage, equip, and support others for deeper commitment to Christ and to faithful discipleship.  Some;
  • Lay Speakers Lead Worship
  • Lay Speakers Care for Others
  • Lay Speakers Lead Small Groups
  • Lay Speakers Teach Good Stewardship
  • Lay Speakers Practice Christian Community
  • Lay Speakers Teach Spiritual Disciplines
  • Lay Speakers Interpret our Wesleyan Heritage

Our Local/Certified Lay Ministers (CLM):  The lay members of the church are extremely
important in the UMC. The Professing Members are part of all major decisions in the church. General,
Jurisdictional, Central, and Annual Conferences are all required to have an equal number of laity and
clergy.  CLMs are not considered clergy but instead remain lay members of the United Methodist Church.
They must complete course work beyond that of Certified Lay Speaker and then can be assigned to
provide pastoral leadership to a church. They do not have sacramental authority.

Our Ministry Teams:  These teams help others grow to a mature faith in God that moves them to
action on behalf of others, especially the least (Mathew 25:31-46).  This is an aspect of disciple making,
that is the ultimate goal of all that we do in the church.
All teams are personally involved and aligned around their single purpose.  Teams work from a biblical and
theological foundation, creating work space in which Christian faith formation happens,  and representing
their specific ministries in meetings of the church council and charge conference.

Salary Staff Openings:  All salary positions are filled at this time.  Praise God!

Volunteers are Welcome:
Lay Visitation Team is being developed.  See Pastor Jen if the Lord is leading you to this ministry.

See Pastor on other ways you can use your spiritual gifts to God' glory.
